Structure & Components
Idlers consist of four key parts, engineered for low friction, reliable sealing, and long life:
- Roller Body: The cylindrical shell (seamless steel pipe, stainless steel, or polymer).
- Shaft: A fixed, high-strength steel rod (the roller rotates around it).
- Bearings: Precision ball/roller bearings (minimize rotational resistance).
- Sealing System: Multi-layer labyrinth + rubber seals (block dust, water, and debris from bearings).
Main Types & Functions:
Idlers are classified by function, position, and design:
(1) Troughing (Carrying) Idlers
- Structure: 3 rollers (1 horizontal center + 2 angled side rollers) forming a trough angle (20°, 35°, 45°).
- Function: Support the loaded carry-side belt, contain bulk materials (prevent spillage), and distribute weight evenly.
- Application: Standard for mining, coal, ports, and heavy bulk handling.
(2) Return Idlers
- Structure: Single flat roller (sometimes with a slight crown).
- Function: Support the empty return-side belt, prevent sagging, and maintain belt alignment.
- Application: Installed below the conveyor frame, spaced 1.5–3m apart.
(3) Impact Idlers (Shock Absorbing)
- Structure: Roller body with rubber/polyurethane rings (15–30mm thick) or buffer layers.
- Function: Absorb heavy impact forces at loading points (where materials drop onto the belt), protecting the belt from tears and abrasion.
- Application: Mining, quarrying, and high-drop loading zones (≤3m drop height).
(4) Self-Aligning (Training) Idlers
- Structure: Troughing/parallel idlers with side guide rollers or a rotating frame.
- Function: Automatically correct belt misalignment (a common issue causing edge wear).
- Application: Long-distance, high-speed conveyors (ports, power plants).
(5) Transition Idlers
- Structure: Gradually angled rollers (between troughing and flat sections).
- Function: Smoothly transition the belt from flat (at pulleys) to troughed (carrying side), reducing belt stress and fatigue.
